Welcome to our freshwater shrimp farming blog. We established this as part of a North Central SARE grant proposal. Our purpose is to provide specific information on establishing a home aquaculture system, that utilizes low-cost and temporary production equipment. There are many sources on raising freshwater shrimp (m. Rosenbergi) in ponds, but the most easily accessible information from a Google search for backyard shrimp (see Google “backyard shrimp” result) outlines general information without specific details of the actual process. We intend to provide enough information that will help you with the specific steps of the process.
We consider this type of aquaculture as sustainable (See article) because our shrimp farming system uses recycled/re-purposed materials for most of the construction, feed from known non-GMO sources, and locally raised livestock. No imported food elements (feed or livestock) are used. Consuming farm-raised shrimp reduces pressure on saltwater shrimp populations while providing a near exact dining experience.
